Just Over The Hill Part One: Rumpus Burger

Whilst it’s clear to see that Saddleworth has some fantastic eateries, every so often we have a little journey just over the hill to see what’s on offer in real-Yorkshire.

Whilst it’s clear to see that Saddleworth has some fantastic eateries, every so often we have a little journey just over the hill to see what’s on offer in real-Yorkshire. We say that because it can be a hot topic as to whether Saddleworth still remains in Yorkshire, whether it’s in Lancashire or Greater Manchester but now isn’t the time, nor place!

On a journey earlier this year we visited Slaithwaite’s “Rumpus Burger”. The restaurant itself houses just a handful of tables, probably 6 at the most, but the unique design of the building it sits in is effortlessly cool, with an elevated view across the canal in the town.

Rumpus serves possibly the best burgers we’ve ever had (and we’ve had plenty), and whatsmore - their “Longhorn” cattle, now considered a rare breed, are reared just round the corner on their own farm. The meat is made into burgers by specialists Taste Tradition, who’ve bagged numerous national industry awards over the years using that very same meat. Other burgers on their menu are made up from their “Limousin” cattle, a French breed of beef cattle, originally from the Limousin & Marche regions of France and are equally as impressive.

Elsewhere on the menu you’ll find The Allotment, a falafel burger with rocket, hummus, roasted red pepper, red onion, halloumi and garlic mayo. We didn’t try that ourselves but a quick glance at reviews on trip advisor and you guessed it - “My gf is a fussy veggie of over 20 years and she says the veggie burger is "the best she has ever had.”. In fact, Rumps has a score of 4.5 out of 5 on Trip Advisor out of a whopping 200 reviews, that should give you some idea of just how much of a gem this little place really is.

With a great selection of both local and international beers on the menu and excellent attentive service, it’s hard to see what Rumpus Burger is missing (here’s a clue - nothing, they’ve got it all). So do yourselves a favour and get a table booked when lockdown is over, you really won’t regret it. If you can’t wait that long, as we couldn’t, you can order online and collect. With a clear road you can be there in just over ten minutes from Delph, so get your heated seats on in anticipation of having a passenger seat full of grub!
